Our Food & Nutrition Philosophies
Let’s go right back to the beginning and paint the picture…
I was a busy mum, working in the corporate world in Melbourne. Each night, I’d race to do the daycare pickup, put a snotty-nosed and hungry toddler in the back of the car, and then turn my mind to dinner…what the eff are we going to have? Racking my brain…ok, picky plate it is…I’ll put some fruit on there, whatever veg and something I can throw in the air fryer. Again. Same as the last 3 nights. Cue, feelings of guilt.
Relate to these thoughts? I’m sure you do.
I tried a range of meal kits, prepared meals, supermarket ready meals – and struggled to find something that felt “homemade” and that I could just pull out of the freezer when I needed it to feed the whole family. I wanted something that I’d be happy to eat, and to feed my kids, on a regular basis. And so, I started Just Nourish.
How we’ve made Just Nourish different
- Nutrition is the Focus
As a Nutritionist, I obviously have a deep love for all things food. My personal food philosophy is that good nutrition extends beyond the macronutrients, vitamins and minerals you consume. Good nutrition means also having a healthy relationship with food, positive food attitudes and an understanding of the role that food plays in our lives. At Just Nourish, we seek to educate and support positive attitudes in all these domains, so our customers can role model positive behaviours and attitudes to the next generation. Whilst nourishing their little bodies.
- Small-batch Cooking
We want to maintain that feeling of “homemade” that we all crave after a busy month or an overseas holiday. That means we hand-prepare all our food in small batches using plenty of fresh herbs and our own homemade broths.
- Supporting Local
This is so important to us. We are a local Melbourne-based business, and we love working with our local producers and farmers to source the best quality produce for our meals. We prioritise organic, free-range and regenerative ingredients wherever we can. You can view which of our ingredients are certified organic on our website.
- Encouraging the Next Gen of Adventurous Eaters
One of the best ways to support the development of taste preferences and likes amongst children is through exposure to a variety of foods. We can help! We love to refresh our menu with new flavours, spices and herbs from a variety of cuisines, and we design our meals to be shared by the family. We are big believers in the value of family mealtimes as a tool to support the development of positive food attitudes and behaviours and seek to create a service that makes it easier for families to enjoy regular shared meals and reap the benefits of this.
- Commitment to Sustainability
This is an ongoing focus for us, and we commit to evolving and continuously improving our practices. All our packaging is either compostable or recyclable. We utilise local farmers and suppliers who practice ethical and sustainable farming practices. And we are advocates for increasing the consumption of plant-based meals.
So, Who Are Our Products For?
Whilst our food is for absolutely everyone, we’ve developed our range with a few groups of people in mind.
Pospartum Mums
We want to support that period of intense healing by making it easy to eat well and rest. We have a postpartum bundle that contains a selection of nutrient-dense foods, whilst being uniquely curated to support the needs of a new mum:
- Energy dense snacks
- Slow-cooked meals for easy digestion
- Iron-rich meals
- High protein content
- A wide variety of wholegrains and plants
Busy Families
- Family meals and sides
- Children’s snacks (great for lunchboxes)
Now, while we’re at it – please let go of any feelings of guilt that you might have (like I did) about your parenting and the food that you’re putting on the table at the end of the day. We’re all doing a wonderful job, and those picky plates are an amazing and nutritious dinner option for our little ones. And cereal is also a valid option for dinner! The nutritionist said so.
