Guest post from Ben McIntosh: Where Family Life Destroys Fitness (and how to avoid it)

We’ve all got the same 24hrs in a day however what NEEDS to be done within the 24 hours is another story.

We do get prickly when people say that, especially 24yr old PTs on social media..

They don’t have a clue what it’s like to juggle drop offs, kinder, school, swimming lessons, sports trainings, dinners, bedtime, your own career, your own relationship AND maintain a social life…

Oh, did we mention stay fit and healthy and make time for yourself whilst you’re doing all that?

But we’ve all got the same 24hrs…

It’s just that yours (and ours) are full to the brim!

What we want to do today is compliment the incredible work that Just Nourish does on the nutrition side, with some fitness and health tactics that we use every day with our busy community.

We own and run our business BD Fitness together, all whilst having 3 kids (12, 5 and 3) so we totally understand the hustle and bustle that raising a healthy family entails.

We’re all about proactive action at BD Fitness…

We want to make sure you’re armed with actionable behaviours that suit a busy family, that you can perform at any time, in any location to make sure you’re in control of your fitness.

We’ll keep it short, and sharp (we KNOW you’re busy)...

1- Change the way you view fitness…

This is more important than most of our new clients realise, and integral to the long term success that they have with us.

If you want to achieve long lasting change, you must be consistent in your routine. If healthy action is predicated upon having time, or being motivated, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

“You won’t rise to the levels of your goals, but fall to the levels of your systems”

We stand behind this quote from James Clear (Atomic Habits).

So what would we recommend?

Instead of having a workout planned if the day goes well, or ‘if you get a chance’ later on..

Schedule it like you would any other appointment.

It’s simply part of ‘who you are’ and not who you’re trying to be.

The identity shift is absolutely crucial to the ongoing practice of your workouts and exercise regime.

Sorry to be all ‘life coach woo woo’...

But it really is important!

2- Focus on progress, NOT PERFECTION…

How often, in your wild family life, do things go exactly to plan?

Ever see that show ‘Doomsday preppers’ where those people in the States show you the years worth of canned foods they have in their bunkers?

We need a similar approach for fitness…

If you can get to the gym for a workout or class, terrific..

But what about when the kids are sick, or you miss the class time..

Instead of throwing in the towel, do you have a backup option that will leave you with a sense of accomplishment? Boosting your self esteem and leaving feeling in control of your health?

Most people we begin to work with don’t have this, but it’s a lot more simple than you realise.

For example:

When it comes to a gym session the benefit is in the movement, not being in the actual environment of the gym.

So if Harry (our 3yr old) is sick then what’s stopping me from setting the clock for 20mins and doing a workout of 5 Pushups, 10 Crunches and 15 Squats as many times in 20mins as possible?

Honestly, only you in your head saying ‘it’s not as good’...

Guess what?

It absolutely is just as good, and having this plan in your back pocket for when life ruins your schedule is crucial to you being consistent enough to see results.

3- A changing lifestyle requires a changing approach…

If we had $1 for every parent we’ve coached who initially wants to try and do what they did when they were 25, we’d currently be travelling the world living on interest ;)

Not only are you (a little bit) older, with a few niggles and a lot more stress in your life…

But you simply cannot do what you did 20yrs ago and expect to see the same results.

When we’re 20 we’re built with rubber and magic, your body will absorb whatever you throw at it and you’ll perform at a high level.

When we’re 40 we no longer have that luxury…

We need to be efficient and organised with our approach to wellness.

The lifestyle of a 20yr old is not either of those things.

You’re in a new stage of life, and your approach to fitness needs to recognise this.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst there tends to be a lot of confusion in the world about how to be fit and healthy, the reality is the basics always have, and will continue to serve us well.

It’s what we coach our busy community on every week, to great effect.

Keep it simple, be consistent and always be curious!
